Local produce added to Detroit Schools lunch menus

Some items offered Monday on Detroit Public Schools lunch menus will feature local produce, including Michigan-grown acorn squash and blueberries, as part of national Food Day. The district says the observation of locally-grown produce is being done in conjunction with its Farm-to-School program,

Local produce added to Detroit Schools lunch menus

The district's Food Services office started the program in 2009 by serving local and regional fresh fruits and vegetables to students in 22 schools. The program expanded last year to 43 schools and now is held in all district schools. Food Day is a nationwide campaign to change the way Americans eat and think about food. Michigan potatoes, apples, asparagus and other fruits and vegetables will be on school menus in the coming months.
